The buyer who called while you were showing a home
Most sellers hire the first agent they speak to. Here's what a missed call really costs a realtor, and how to answer every lead without being glued to your phone.
You’re mid-showing when your phone buzzes. A seller found you online and wants to list this week. You can’t pick up. You call back two hours later and they’ve already signed with someone else.
Here’s the uncomfortable part: that’s the normal outcome, not the unlucky one.
Most sellers only ever call one agent
The National Association of Realtors found that 81% of sellers contact only one agent before choosing, and most buyers interview just one too. The agent who answers first usually becomes the agent, before anyone compares who is actually better.
And almost nobody answers fast. A 2024 mystery-shopper study by real estate analyst Mike DelPrete submitted inquiries to dozens of brokerages and found 47% got no response at all. The ones that did reply averaged more than eight hours. Even among the largest brokerages in the country, fewer than one in ten replied within five minutes.
That five-minute mark matters more than it looks. A long-running MIT study found a lead contacted within five minutes is 21 times more likely to qualify than one contacted after thirty. A buyer scrolling listings at 9pm has moved on by morning.
What one missed call actually costs
Put a number on it. At the current median home price of around $407,000, a single missed listing is roughly eleven thousand dollars in commission walking out the door. One call.
How to answer every lead without living on your phone
You can’t answer every call while you’re showing homes, hosting an open house, or sitting in a closing. So don’t. I set up an AI receptionist, Grace AI, that answers your line 24/7 in a natural voice, answers the basic questions, captures the lead, and books the call or showing straight to your calendar.
From there the system keeps working on its own. It texts and emails the lead to confirm, sends reminders so they actually show up, and follows up on the ones who go quiet, so a hot lead never sits there cooling off. Prefer to reach out on your site? AI Chat Lead Capture does the same in the chat.
Every lead gets an answer in seconds and a follow-up that doesn’t depend on you remembering, whether it runs on the Amso AI CRM or pipes into the CRM you already use.
You stay in the field. Nothing leaks.
